서울대학교가 교양과목 개편을 추진 중이다. 졸업을 위해 필수적으로 이수해야 했던 '대학영어' 과목이 듣기, 말하기, 독해 등으로 세분화된다.
필수 이수 지정은 각 단과대학이 자율적으로 결정한다.서울대 관계자는 28일 '영어에 대한 학생들의 편차가 커 대학영어 과목을 다양한 과목으로 세분화 할 필요가 있다'며 '필수 이수 과목이던 대학영어를 세분화 해 각 단과대에서 자율적으로 필수 지정을 할 수 있도록 할 예정'이라고 밝혔다.
서울대는 또 영어와 함께 2~3개 외국어를 이수하도록 하는 방안을 추진하고 있다. 이 또한 각 대학에서 자율적으로 결정한다.
현재 인문대학과 자유전공학부가 제2외국어를 이수하고 있는데 이를 더욱 확대하는 것이다.
인문·사회계열 학생들의 수학과 자연과학에 대한 소양이 부족하다는 판단에 따라 수학 실력 향상을 위한 강좌도 개설될 예정이다.
서울대 관계자는 '일부에서는 인문사회계열 학생들에 대한 수학 과목 이수를 필수로 지정해야 한다는 목소리도 있다'면서도 '필수 과목 지정은 아직 결정된 것은 아니다'라고 말했다.
한편 서울대 기초교육원은 2014년을 목표로 교양과정 전반에 대한 개편방안을 논의 중이다. 이같은 내용의 교양 과정 개편안은 내년 상반기에 확정될 예정이다. -The Korea Times-

Seoul National University (SNU) is considering making a currently mandatory English course optional in order to better meet students’ educational needs.
According to the Faculty of Liberal Education, the nation’s top school is in the process of working out a plan to allow students to choose whether to take the English program.
“We are discussing the measure as we acknowledge that each student has different levels of English proficiency,” said an official.
The English course has been a prerequisite for graduation since the school was founded in 1946.
But it exempts students with high scores on the Test of English Proficiency (TEPS) developed by Seoul National University from the compulsory English course.
SNU is studying ways of breaking up the English program into listening, speaking and reading comprehension classes, so that students can take the ones they lack skills in.
Those who choose not to take the class will be able to take another foreign language instead. School officials are also discussing requiring students to take two to three foreign language courses.
“The measure is aimed shifting the focus from English and offering students a greater opportunity to learn other languages,” the official said.
Currently only the colleges of liberal studies and humanities have students complete a foreign language course that excludes English.
The school may also start offering math courses for students majoring in humanities or social sciences, based on the students’ lack of knowledge in the field.
Another subject of discussion is on the method of evaluating students. Currently, instructors grade the students’ performance on a curve which reserves a 70 percent quota for students to receive an A or B letter grade.
Students have voiced their complaints about how this method ends up giving too many students good grades, and the school is now considering changing it to an absolute evaluation system in which instructors grade students solely based on their individual performances.
The school will decide on the measures under discussion before next year’s spring semester.
